I began to write this song while driving through Rapidan Virginia late one summer night. There were lots of fireflies out as I recall. I had just watched a special on TV that featured Lyle Lovett and Randy Newman (two of my all time favorite songwriters) It seems like they write a lot of songs about places. Well, I've never written about a place before. Lyle Lovett has a song called "I've been to Memphis." I was singing that song when it occurred to me that I'd never been to memphis... and that seemed like a good enough opening line.... Its funny to me now that it starts with "I've never been to Memphis, and I don't want to go"... not because I think memphis is a place I don't want to visit, but because I've built it up so much in my imagination. I mean Elvis and Al Green and BB King... so much history, so much Barbeque... I didn't want to get there and ruin the image I had in my mind. Its really about a girl. Not one in particular, mind you. Just about the idea of a girl who lives in Memphis... if you want to know more you'll have to listen to the song.
